Chairwoman Shkut has called for a special meeting of the Planning Board to be held Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. at Village Hall. This special meeting is intended to replace the regularly scheduled Dec. meeting (12/20), which has been cancelled due to a lack of quorum.

The Village of Marvin seeks qualified applicants for the full-time position of Village Administrator/Senior Planner to carry out the policies of the elected governing body (Mayor and 4-member Council). The successful candidate will be responsible for professional level tasks including, but not limited to: general supervision of departments, budget preparation and modification, providing the Village Council with information on the status of projects and municipal functions, as well as Coordination of the Village’s planning, zoning and subdivision functions to include current and long-range planning, annexation administration, subdivision procedures, and development review. The candidate will be responsible for leading and managing a staff of five employees that deliver quality work. The candidate must demonstrate familiarity in municipal finance, planning, and zoning administration and possess the ability to work effectively with the governing council, staff, and citizens.
This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Public Policy or other appropriate field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of three years managerial experience or equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Salary: $50-65K (commensurate with experience and demonstrated skills). Benefits package is provided.

The Union County Fire Marshal has issued an open burning ban that prohibits open burning within 100 feet of a structure. This local ban is effective immediately throughout the County and will remain in effect until further notice. Anyone in violation of the open burning ban will be asked to extinguish the fire.
The open burning ban is authorized by the Union County Fire Marshal’s Office per the North Carolina State Building Code, Fire Prevention Code Section 307 to help prevent the potential for increased wildfires due to extremely dry weather conditions within the county. Open burning includes burning of leaves, branches and other plant material, in addition to the use of recreational fires, bonfires and outdoor fireplaces.
The open burning ban does not apply to cooking fires, such as grills or outdoor cookers.
In all cases, it is illegal to burn trash, lumber, tires, newspapers, plastics or other non-vegetative materials. Residents should be especially careful with any potential ignition sources such as cigarettes or sparks from lawn equipment.
The ban on open burning is necessary because of the dry weather conditions and the potential for the increase in human-caused wildfires in the region. As of Nov. 20, there have been 3,021 wildfires affecting more than 19,058 acres on state protected lands across North Carolina this year. In the mountains alone, there have been 1,203 fires that have burned 4,015 acres.

Representatives from NCDOT will provide an update on the proposed NC 84 - Rea Road Extension project (U-3467) at a Village of Wesley Chapel Council meeting, located at the Wesley Chapel Town Hall on Highway 84, on Tuesday, November 29 at 6:30 p.m.

The Village Council has agreed to honor long-time Village volunteer, Lanny Openshaw, by naming an area at the Marvin Efird Park in his honor.
Lanny has served the residents of Marvin and Union County as a member of the Planning Board, Council, Parks & Rec Board, as well as a Union County Commissioner. He has volunteered at the park in the role of Park Supervisor and has worked to improve the park since it's purchase.
On Sunday, November 6 at 2 p.m., the cornhole course next to the barn will be officially named 'The Lanny Openshaw Cornhole Course.' The cornhole course idea was conceived by Lanny, constructed by volunteers, and lovingly maintained by Lanny.
The public is cordially invited to attend this ceremony to honor our friend and dedicated public servant.

The Village Council and the Planning Board have both called for a special meeting to be held Wednesday, November 2 at 6 p.m. The meetings will be held off-site at the offices of Shook Kelly and Associates, 2151 Hawkins St, Charlotte. The purpose of both meetings is to hold an informal work session with a planning consultant on the Land Use Plan and the possible Village Center District project.

The Village Council recessed their 10/27/16 regular work session meeting. The meeting will reconvene on Tuesday, November 1 at 5 p.m. at Banks Fellowship Hall. The only remaining discussion item on the agenda is the Rezoning of Parcels 06-183-011, 06-183-011B, 06-183-011C, 06-156-014A and 06-159-005B from MXCD to ICD-Marvin Gardens. The public hearing on this item was completed. The Council and the applicant will continue the discussion and take possible action at this meeting.

Please take notice: Members of the Village Council will be attending a luncheon today (Friday, October 28, 2016) at the home of a Marvin resident. There is a possibility of quorum of the Council at this luncheon, however this is a purely social event and no Village business will be conducted and no action will be taken.
